What do you do with a smelly wooden bowl?

I found this big wooden bowl at a thrift store last year. It really is quite large and heavy. I noticed right away that the bowl had sort of an odd smell to it. Almost like someone oiled it up with motor oil or something. I thought that maybe the smell would go away over time.....but, it didn't. Even after months of being out in the garage. The smell was so bad that I couldn't have it in the house at all. Weird, huh?
Well, I really wanted to use it so I decided that I would paint over it and seal it and see if that would help.

I chose a gray-ish blue color to paint it with.
I seem to recall painting many a thing with this same color around 1987! haha!
Funny how things come back around in style, isn't it?!
Here is a side view.
I almost think this bowl is hand made because of it's uneven sides.
And, here's the good news..... The smell is gone.
Who knew???
The bowl is currently waiting to be filled. I thought I would make some rag balls to put in it. I have made 4 so far.....but, it's such a big bowl, I think I may need about 110 more! :):)
Have a great day!!

Jo-Anne--that would have been my suggestion! Great minds think alike--hahahahaha.
Do you wrap styrofoam balls or just go with the all-fabric balls?
I but some cheap blouses at yard sales or Goodwill and tear them into strips, wrap into my desired size balls and then wrap with my favorite homespun. And I make various sizes to add interest. You can also put Sweet Annie in the bowl in the empty spaces---great smell.
I have to agree about it being a handmade bowl and I love it. That adds to the appeal for me!

YAY!!! I can smell that smell you were describing. Glad the paint job took care of it.

Hey, are you up for a swap of some sort? Let me know... :)

Have a great day. Julie

Well that's a neat idea that Linda has! I never would have thought of doing that! I buy all my styrofoam balls with 40% off coupons, after-holiday sales and garage sales. Last year after Christmas I bought a couple of ornament packs that came with styrofoam balls (ranging in sizes from 3/4" to 2"), sequins and sequin pins. I got them at Hobby Lobby at 80% off so I basically paid nothing for them and got lots and lots of balls! I have no idea what I'm going to do with the sequins, but I just couldn't pass up that great deal! I also bought out all the 2-pks. of the bigger sizes at 80% off. So maybe you can watch out for something like that. I love rag balls and I think that bowl would look great filled with them!

That's a funny story about the smell. I'm glad that painting it took care of that. I think rag balls would be perfect in there.
